Short CV

Ralf’s CV is not really straight forward. From the Technical University of Berlin, he has received his diplomas in electrical engineering and computer science as well as a PhD, with the curiosity that the second diploma was after the PhD. After spending two one-year postdocs with Prof. Jähnichen and at ICSI, he has spent another five years of research at Rolf Pfeifer’s AI Lab of the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Zurich. There, he received his habilitation in 1998. He had then been working for about two and a half years at UBS, Switzerland’s largest bank. Together with a few others, he configured all the bank’s Unix servers in Switzerland. In 2002, he finally got appointed as a professor at the University of Rostock in a division that is now entitled Faculty of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering.

Teaching Duties

Ralf’s teaching duties include bachelor and master courses in the fields of electrical engineering and computer science, particularly on Einführung in die Praktische Informatik, Soft Computing Methods, Autonomous Mobile Robots, Seminar Ausgewählte Kapitel integrierter Systeme, and Programming Graphical User Interfaces with Qt. At the Technical University of Berlin, he was also teaching classes in Parallel Algorithms and the Verification of Distributed and Parallel Programs. Furthermore, Ralf used to teach the Computer Systems and Architectures classes at both the University of Rostock and at the Fachhochschule Westküste Heide/Holstein.

Transdisziplinary Research and Collaborations

Due to his numerous (international) experiences, Ralf strongly believes in interdisciplinary as well as transdisciplinary working groups. He is thus consequently very open minded in new contacts and collaborations, and maintains active collaborations with other national and international research institutes.

Beyond Work and Spare Time Activities

Besides intensive work, other activities shall also be part of a person’s life. Therefore, Ralf practices various sports, mainly Badminton, Volleyball, and Windsurfing. For the latter, Kanaha Beach Park and Vargas are particularly suited beaches. He also enjoys music, movies, joineries, and mixing cocktails. You are interested in the latter? Then call him and he might help you setup something.
