FPGA-based Implementation of the DCC Protocol for Controlling Model Railways

Description: State-of-the-art digital model railway systems utilize the digital command control (DCC) protocol to control their various digital devices. In order to control the old (legacy) analog devices, the user has to employ extension modules that are of high costs.

Goals: The goal of this task is to develop a digital controller that can be implemented on a field-programmable gate array. In order to achieve a flexibility as high as possible, the second stage should also employ an additional soft-core processor.

Requirements: The applicants should do their studies in electrical engineering, or computer science and should have basic knowledge in VHDL design.

Design and Implementation of a Model Railroad Process Model

Description: For setting up a rather large process model, we are looking for several students who would like to gain hands-on experiences in all engineering areas. The main intention of this project is that in the future, this process model will be used in several classes in order to link theoretical knowledge and concepts with real-world tasks. Depending on the applicant’s knowledge and background, the work will be on any level between fundamental hardware design and advanced programming stuff. This project will be supervised by at least one senior researcher.

Requirements: The applicants should do their studies in electrical engineering, computer science, or related fields including engineering and physics.
